White shirts show stains easily, but with the right steps, you can often remove them completely. Use this guide for food, sweat, oil, makeup, ink, and other common stains.
1. Act Quickly
The faster you treat the stain, the easier it is to remove.
Blot gently—never rub—so the stain doesn’t spread.
2. Identify the Stain Type
Different stains need different treatments:
Oil/Grease
Cooking oil, butter, salad dressing
Use dishwashing liquid
Sweat/Yellowing
Underarms, collar
Use baking soda + hydrogen peroxide
Wine/Coffee/Tea
Dark liquids
Use cold water + laundry detergent
Ink
Pens, markers
Use rubbing alcohol
Makeup/Foundation/Lipstick
Use makeup remover or dish soap
3. Follow the Right Method
A. For Oil & Grease Stains
- Sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda to absorb oil.
- Let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then brush off.
- Apply dish soap directly to the stain.
- Rub gently and rinse with warm water.
- Wash as usual.
B. For Sweat & Yellow Stains
- Mix:
- 1 tbsp baking soda
- 1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide
- 1 tbsp dish soap
- Apply to stain and scrub lightly.
- Let sit for 30 minutes.
- Rinse and wash normally.
C. For Coffee, Tea, or Wine
- Flush with cold water from the back of the stain.
- Apply liquid laundry detergent.
- Let sit for 5 minutes.
- Rinse again and wash normally.
For stubborn stains:
➡ Soak in warm water + oxygen bleach for 1 hour.
D. For Ink Stains
- Place a paper towel under the stain.
- Dab rubbing alcohol onto it.
- Keep blotting until ink lifts.
- Rinse and wash.
Do NOT use hot water — it sets ink.
E. For Makeup Stains
- Apply makeup remover or dish soap directly.
- Gently rub in circular motion.
- Rinse with warm water.
- Wash as usual.
4. Always Air-Dry First
Heat from the dryer can set any remaining stain permanently.
Air dry the shirt after washing and check if the stain is gone.
If still visible, repeat the treatment.
5. For Stubborn Stains
Soak the entire shirt in warm water with oxygen bleach (not chlorine bleach) for 1–3 hours.
Oxygen bleach is safe on most fabrics and powerful on tough stains.
Final Tip
Never use chlorine bleach on protein-based stains (milk, sweat, blood) — it makes them worse.
